What Type Of Care Do I need?
Understanding the different types of care providers can help you determine the best services for your needs. Here’s a quick guide to the roles, responsibilities, and services offered by HomeCARE Connection, along with their education and licensing requirements in Ontario.
 
1. Personal Support Worker (PSW)
Role: PSWs provide personal care and support to clients, focusing on daily living activities.
Responsibilities:Assist with grooming, hygiene, and mobility transfers. Ensure client comfort and dignity. Recognize changes in a client’s condition and communicate these to healthcare professionals.
Services Offered:Personal care (bathing, dressing). Meal preparation and feeding assistance. Medication reminders.
Education & Licensing:Completion of a PSW program (usually 6-12 months) from a recognized college or institution.
No formal licensing is required, but certification from a recognized program is preferred.

2. Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)
Role: RPNs provide nursing care under the supervision of an RN or physician.
Responsibilities:Administer medications and treatments. Monitor patient health and vital signs. Provide education and support to clients and families.
Services Offered:Wound care and management. Chronic disease management. Health assessments.
Education & Licensing:Completion of a two-year diploma in Practical Nursing from a recognized college.
Must pass the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE) and be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).

3. Registered Nurse (RN)
Role: RNs provide comprehensive nursing care and coordinate patient care plans.
Responsibilities:Conduct assessments and develop care plans. Administer medications and treatments. Supervise and educate other healthcare staff.
Services Offered:Advanced medical care and interventions. Patient education and advocacy. Coordination of care with other healthcare providers.
Education & Licensing:Completion of a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a recognized university.
Must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) and be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).

4. Home Support Worker (HSW)
Role: HSWs assist with non-medical tasks to support independent living.
Responsibilities:Help with household tasks and errands. Provide companionship and emotional support. 
Services Offered:Housekeeping, laundry, and meal preparation. Companionship and social interaction.
Education & Licensing:No formal education requirement, but training programs are available.
Certification is not mandatory but may enhance job prospects.

5. Caregiver
Role: Caregivers provide personal and emotional support to clients.
Responsibilities:Assist with daily living activities. Provide companionship and emotional support. 
Services Offered:Light housekeeping and meal preparation. Transportation assistance to appointments.
Education & Licensing: No formal education or licensing requirements, but training or certification can be beneficial.
