Core Duties of RPNs

Below are the key duties our RPNs perform, either independently or as part of a collaborative team:

Medication Management
Preparing and administering medications and treatments with a thorough understanding of their purpose and potential adverse effects.

Complete Documentation

Completing all necessary documentation for the observation, planning, and evaluation of care, including physician orders.

Daily Monitoring

Functioning in a monitoring capacity to ensure client care is completed effectively while providing guidance and support to other staff members.

Open Communication

Maintaining open lines of communication between nursing shifts and coordinating with other agencies, supervisors, physicians, clients, and families.

Patient Advocacy

Acting on behalf of clients to uphold their rights and prevent any form of abuse.
Emergency Response
Utilizing first aid knowledge in emergency situations to ensure client safety.

Safety Awareness

Being vigilant about safety issues, fulfilling responsibilities in a safe manner, and promoting good safety practices among staff.

Client Confidentiality

Upholding the confidentiality of client information at all times.

Team Collaboration

Working collaboratively as a team member to deliver comprehensive care.

Physical Capabilities

Performing essential physical activities, including kneeling, standing, reaching, and more, to meet client needs effectively.

Daily Assessments

In addition to the core duties, our RPNs conduct daily assessments to monitor the health status of clients. These assessments include:
  • Vital Signs Monitoring: Regularly checking blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and oxygen saturation to identify any changes in health.
  • Physical Assessments: Evaluating the overall physical condition, including mobility, skin integrity, and any signs of discomfort or pain.
  • Cognitive Assessments: Observing and documenting any changes in mental status, behaviour, or cognitive function.
  • Nutritional Evaluations: Assessing dietary intake and nutritional needs to ensure proper nutrition is being maintained.
  • Emotional and Psychological Assessments: Monitoring mood and emotional well-being to provide necessary support and interventions.

Home Care Services Provided by RPNs

In addition to the core duties and daily assessments, our RPNs offer a range of specialized services in the home setting, including:
  • Personal Care Assistance: Helping clients with daily living activities such as bathing, grooming, and dressing to promote independence and dignity.
  • Wound Care Management: Providing care for wounds, including dressing changes and monitoring for signs of infection.
  • Rehabilitation Support: Aiding clients in recovery from surgery or illness through prescribed exercises and physical therapy techniques.
  • Chronic Disease Management: Educating clients and families about managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
  • Emotional Support: Offering companionship and emotional support to enhance the mental well-being of clients, particularly those facing isolation or depression.
  • Coordination of Care: Collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure a comprehensive care plan is in place, addressing all aspects of the client’s health.
